MRI Scanning
Yorkshire Vets are now able to offer MRI scanning for pets.
This cutting-edge technology takes us one step beyond X-rays to painlessly see what is going on in the brain, spinal cord, joints and other difficult areas of the body.
MRI scanning is almost essential these days in the successful diagnosis and treatment of many conditions - slipped discs, head trauma, stroke and congenital problems such as syringohydromyelia in Cavalier King Charles Spaniels.
If you would like to know more then please just give us a ring at the Thornbury Hospital.
Chester's Story:
Early in 2010 Chester suffered a 'slipped' disc - something that happens not uncommonly in dogs and sometimes in cats too. The resulting pressure on the spinal cord caused Chester to suddenly lose all function in his hind legs; very distressing for all concerned.
In such severe cases surgery gives the best hope of recovery but the crucial thing is to be able to identify the problem disc. Conventional x-rays are generally inadequate as the intervertebral discs themselves are not visible with radiography.
After an MRI scan we were able to see the problem.
The surgical team led by vets Tamsin Humphrey and Alan Watt operated on the affected disc to relieve the pressure.
Several weeks of rehabilitation and physiotherapy later (thank you nurses!) and Chester has done fantastically well and is happily back to near his best.
