New Graduate Veterinary Surgeon

We are offering the opportunity for newly graduated veterinary surgeons to join our experienced veterinary team.

We are offering the opportunity for newly graduated veterinary surgeons to join our experienced veterinary team.

A first job can be a daunting prospect, so we aim to support successful applicants in the transition between university and practice life.

When you start you will be given a mentor who will introduce you to the staff and help you get to grips with how the practice works.

For the first six months of your employment you will be given ‘training days’ for 1 in 3 of your working days. On these days you will not have a specific role on the rota, instead you will be free to observe and learn from more experienced members of staff.

We will give you the support you need to build on what you have learnt at vet school.

 Initially you will have a meeting with your mentor every 2 weeks to discuss your progress and any areas where you may need help. This will enable you to make the most of your training days.

Then, over your six-month induction period, we aim to give you the confidence and skills you will need to be successful in general practice including;

  • Consulting skills
  • First opinion case management
  • Lumpectomies and suturing
  • Neutering
  • Dental treatment
  • Dealing with inpatients
  • X-rays and basic ultrasound
  • Emergency case management

You will be working one full weekend and one Saturday morning in 5 weeks, with 2 days off during the week in lieu.

We’ve been running this program since 2015 and of the 9 Vets who have participated in it, 6 have remained and still work with us today!

Please send your CV and covering letter to Katie Sherwood-Hirst at katiesherwood@yorkshirevets.co.uk
